Black Friday email marketing - Check your domain before you send

Before scheduling your Black Friday newsletter, check that your sending domain is correctly authenticated. Missing or incorrect authentication can cause emails to be rejected or marked as spam—regardless of how good the offer is.
For South African SMEs preparing a campaign, start with one practical question for whoever manages your domain:
“Do our BulkMail campaign emails pass authentication, and have all our legitimate sending services been checked?”
You do not need to become an email security specialist. You need the right person to check the setup before your campaign depends on it.
Understand the three authentication checks
Email authentication helps receiving systems assess whether the use of a sending domain is authorised.
- SPF checks whether the sending server is authorised for the domain used during delivery.
- DKIM verifies a digital signature associated with a signing domain.
- DMARC checks whether a passing SPF or DKIM result aligns with the domain in the From address your subscribers see. It also lets you publish a policy for messages that fail that check.
Authentication supports delivery; it does not guarantee inbox placement. Sender reputation, recipient complaints and sending practices still matter.
Check the setup, not just whether records exist
Ask BulkMail support for the sending-domain records and instructions specific to your account. Have your domain administrator review the existing configuration before making changes.
Then send a test through BulkMail using the From address planned for your campaign. Ask your administrator to inspect the authentication results and confirm that DMARC passes—not simply whether the email appeared in their inbox.
Include other services that send email using your domain in the review, such as your invoicing system or order confirmations. A correctly configured newsletter does not establish that every other sending service is ready.
Do not rush into stricter DMARC settings
A DMARC policy set to p=none does not request quarantine or rejection when a message fails DMARC. It is commonly used while monitoring and checking the setup. Messages can still pass authentication with this policy.
Policies set to p=quarantine or p=reject request stronger handling of messages that fail. However, changing the policy before checking legitimate senders can disrupt genuine business email.
Review legitimate sending services, resolve problems and test before tightening the policy. Black Friday is a reason to start preparing—not a reason to skip those checks.
Prepare your audience as carefully as your domain
Authentication does not give you permission to email someone.
BulkMail requires proven permission. Check where contacts came from, what they agreed to receive and whether they have opted out. Keep unresolved permission records out of the campaign, preserve existing unsubscribes and include a clearly visible unsubscribe link in every marketing newsletter.
Use Black Friday interest to build your ongoing newsletter audience through a clear website sign-up form. For example, a trade supplier could invite visitors to receive product updates and relevant business offers.
Explain exactly what subscribers will receive, record their choice and test the form on a phone. BulkMail’s forms support marketing-consent recording, including the wording shown to the subscriber and the date and time.
Leave time to test—and monitor the send
Do not jump from occasional newsletters to a much larger send without reviewing the approach. Increase volumes gradually where needed, and monitor delivery failures and available complaint signals before continuing with further scheduled groups.
Before scheduling, also check the email on a phone, follow the main call to action and test the unsubscribe journey.
Your aim is straightforward: a checked sending setup, a permission-based audience and a campaign that works from the first click to the final action.
